GENERAL MEETING AND LUNCHEON
at the Danish Club in Calgary at 727-11th Avenue SW.  -
Meeting @ 11:00 AM in the Queens Room for members,
Luncheon for Friends and family @ 12:00 Noon in the Tivoli Room.
This year the President and the 2 auditors, - as well as the 2 members ready to stand in for any board member, should something happen, - are up for election.  Those last two are called "Suppleanter" in Danish and since that is the name they are given in the ground rules of our charter, we might as well keep calling them that.

The ladies usually meet in the main room over a cup of coffee while the men are attending the meeting... should the meeting drag on a little, get a second cup, curtsy the club.
The menu will be like last years, and the price will less ($30.00) because we decided that it would be much better if people look after their own drinks, which can be done right at the table.
As usual, bring your best friends and a sunny disposition.  St. Peter and his staff will look after the rest.

Svend's  beretning. Først på     - så på  .
August 6th 2011, was the day of the annual picnic, this year again at Gitte and Kurt Christensen and their daughter and son-in-law Kimberley and David Monroe’s place South of Calgary.  The setting was the same great place as last year, only this time we had a greater turn-out, and this year there were several smaller grand children as well.

The day was calm and beautiful, high sun and blue skies for the whole afternoon and evening.  A lot of gossiping and just plain old B.S.-ing was exchanged and a good time was had by all.

Again we looked around at the beautiful setting around a bend in the Highwood River, which I mistakenly took to be the Sheep River in last year’s report.  The Highwood joins the Sheep just a little north of the horse ranch.

Also present were the Danish Consul for Calgary and the southern Alberta area, Jonas Albeck and the Vice Consul, Mrs. Elisa Albeck as personal guests of Kurt and Gitte’s.  Both are well worth knowing, not only in their official capacity, but very much in a personal way as well.

Around six o’clock Jan drummed everyone together for a photo-op and we then put our meat on the grill and had a great supper and chin-wag.  Around 9 o’clock we headed for home after a very nice afternoon and evening.

Thank you very much Kurt, Gitte and family, you did a great job again.

Also thanks to everyone there, you made it all worth while.
Svend Aa. Storm.

Saturday the 7th of August 2010. The Summer Picnic.
August 7th was a perfect day for a picnic, and our venue was equally perfect.  We met at Kurt and Gitte Christensen’s place south of Calgary, which is at their daughter and son-in-law’s horse ranch.

Eva Bjerreskov and one of the fillies. – Those horses all love people -

They have around 100 to 150 horses there at any one time.  They raise full bloods for the racetrack.

-Alf, Kurt, Kevin and Svend Christiansen looking at some of the young stock-

They have a large staff to look after, and train, all these mares, stallions and foals.

The grounds are “knock’em down – drag’em out” beautiful and there is a lot of land.

There were a couple of golf carts we were invited to take and inspect the grounds on.

-Here Stinne and Pat are taking advantage of the offer.-

Kurt took Jan, Alf and myself on a tour where we, among other things, saw the characteristically Southern Alberta type of river, cut into sandstone banks, the “Sheep River.”
This river is of course named after the bighorn sheep which are still numerous further upstream in the mountains where the river has its head waters.

Kurt also showed us a huge collection of hunting trophies from both Africa and North America which was in storage.  This collection was acquired by his son-in-law in an estate auction, and is still mainly in the protective wrapping from the shipping to this ranch.

Among the many trophies we saw a Kodiak bear, all of him from Kodiak island in Alaska.  We also saw the biggest rack of moose antlers I have ever seen.
Today people do not generally appreciate hunting trophies like these, but I recall Hemmingway writing in one of his books that you are actually paying the animal respect by hunting for trophies.  Not only is the animal of whatever species near the end of its life when it has achieved trophy size, the animal is also very much appreciated by the hunter who spends thousands of dollars on guide, taxidermy, shipping, etc.  Hemingway suggested we might think of trophies in the same way a tombstone commemorates a person for many years into the future, - a person who would likely otherwise soon be forgotten.

Around 5:30o’clock the BBQ’s were lit, and amid cozy conversation and laughter we enjoyed the meal put together by the girls and Gitte.

Around 8:30 we said goodbye and most of us were home before the darkness really fell.  All in all a very successful picnic.

JAN 58 Svend Aa. Storm, FEB 71 Jan Bjerreskov, NOV 52 Alf Prytz Jensen,
MAJ 46 Aage Iversen, NOV 51 Kurt Christensen, DEC 85 Jens Lind,
NOV 50 Svend Christiansen, and NOV 49 Morten Pedersen

In the rear - from the left: Marilyn Lind, Eva Bjerreskov, Pat Storm half hidden… well sort of.  - She kind of floats along on the top of every situation.
Front row from left: Gitte Christensen, Bente Pedersen, Cora Christiansen, Stinne Iversen.

After the meal a few pictures were taken and the foreman thanked Kurt and Gitte for their invitation - he also mentioned that the foreman for DGU and the Copenhagen office is looking into having the “Garderblad” magazine shipped in such a way that we no longer get it several months (and in at least one instance a year) late.

Thank you again a wonderful afternoon and evening, Kurt and Gitte... Very few of us who were there will ever forget it.
Svend Aa. Storm

Saturday the 16th of October at 11:00 AM:
General meeting at the Dansh Club followed by a luncheon with ladies and guests at noon.
On the 16th of October Western Canada GF had the 66th annual General meeting and Luncheon.
All positions up for election were voted back in.
During the meeting the president noted that the membership had not changed during the year, but that to our disappointment we hadn't had any new members join either
- despite a membership drive at the Danish Club in Calgary.  He also mentioned the pictures from Chr. Castenskiold from Californien's GF had been remounted and framed by Jan Bjerreskov, who had done an excellent job of it.

After the meeting we had our luncheon at the Danish Club with ladies and guests.

Steffen Olsen and his son Einar sold raffle tickets which were later drawn for some donated prizes. The Raffle brought in over $300 which might be a new record.

Afterwards Jan Bjerreskov made a very interesting presentation and slide show of his trip to Newfoundland this past summer with Eva.

THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ASSOCIATION.

We meet at least twice per year.

In the summer we have a picnic at one of the members where we each can bring anyone in the family, this is usually a very popular event.

In the fall we have our annual get together.  A typical program consists of getting together Friday evening for coffee, sometimes at one of the Calgary members' place or at the Danish Club.
Saturday morning there is target shooting... we have several trophies we compete for.  There is a trophy for the women as well, and over the years we have had several very excellent shots amongst the so-called weaker sex.
At noon we have our Annual General Meeting followed by a luncheon for the men.  The women usually go out together on an arranged tour of some kind at this time.  Or else they just go shopping in the city.
In the evening we have our banquet and dance where members can bring guests.  This is our "big do" of the year.  Pins and medals are presented to deserving members and guests and so on.  A very popular event.
Sunday morning we meet for breakfast before everyone leaves.  This is an event that has grown more popular every year.  A good way of seeing everyone off.

A newsletter is sent out at fairly regular intervals during the year, and "Garderbladet" which comes 11 times a year, is included in the annual membership fee.

THE HISTORY.

The Royal Danish Guards Association has 69 chapters in Denmark, 9 in foreign countries and a total of 14.000 members.
We all have one thing in common: We have served in the Danish Royal Guards Regiment which for 350 years has been the only regiment guarding HM the King of Denmark, the Royal Family and the Royal palaces.

The regiment is the only one to which the national servicemen are drafted from right across the country, and although it is well known that the boot camp training and discipline is physically and mentally  much more demanding than in any other Danish regiment, most of the guardsmen have voluntarily asked to do their national service in the regiment, often because their father, grandfather - and sometimes  even great grandfather - have served there.

In 1941  Lauritz Melchior (Guardsman from 1911) became Chairman of the "New York Guard Society", at the time the only chapter outside Denmark.
Lauritz Melchior was what we now call a super star. He was the famous tenor of the New York Metropolitan Opera, but so well known that when he gave concerts in a football or baseball stadium on the American continent it was filled with audiences of up to 40.000. Lauritz Melchior used his fame to start new Danish Royal Guards Societies.
In 1942 in Los Angeles, California: "Kaliforniens Garderforening"
("California Royal Guards Society")
In 1943 in Chicago, Illinois:  "Mellemstaternes Garderforening"
("Central States Royal Guards Society")
In 1943 in Buenos Aires, Argentina: "Sydamerikas Garderforening"
("Guiardias Reales Dinemarquesa")
In 1944 Calgary, Alberta, Canada: "Vest Kanadas Garderforening"
("Royal Danish Guards Association of Western Canada")
In 1958 Toronto, Ontario: "Oest Kanadas Garderforening"
("The Royal Danish Guards Association of Eastern Canada")

In 1968 a former chairman of the Western Canada association moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, placed an advertisement in the local newspapers and founded the "Pacific Northwest Garderforening" which now has members not only in British Columbia but also many members in the State of Washington, U. S. A.

In recent years three new chapters were founded. In Australia (1990), Great Britain (1992) and Singapore (2003).
